Brief Overview
This educational activity is designed for general practitioners to enhance their skills and confidence in providing comprehensive and evidence-based care during the crucial early stages of pregnancy. It will cover essential aspects from pre-conception counselling and early pregnancy diagnosis to common presentations, screening, risk assessment, and appropriate referral pathways. The program aims to equip GPs to deliver optimal early pregnancy care, ensuring better maternal and fetal outcomes.
Program Details

This activity will:

  • Expand Knowledge: Deepen GPs' understanding of current best practices in pre-conception and early pregnancy care, including screening, risk assessment, and management of common issues.
  • Enhance Skills: Improve their practical skills in history taking, clinical assessment, counselling, and navigating complex early pregnancy scenarios and referral pathways.
  • Influence Attitudes: Foster a proactive and holistic approach to early pregnancy care, promoting empathetic communication and effective collaboration with the wider maternity care team.

Program Outcome

GPs are often the first, and sometimes only, point of contact for women in early pregnancy, making their role critical for foundational care and identifying potential risks. There is a need for GPs to have up-to-date, comprehensive knowledge to provide evidence-based pre-conception counselling and early pregnancy care. This includes confidently diagnosing pregnancy, performing initial assessments and screening, managing common early pregnancy complications, and making timely and appropriate referrals. This activity addresses these needs, enhancing GPs' ability to provide holistic, person-centred care and ensuring optimal starts for both mother and baby.

By completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Provide comprehensive pre-conception counselling that addresses health optimisation and risk reduction.
  • Accurately diagnose and date early pregnancy, initiating appropriate initial investigations.
  • Assess and manage common symptoms and concerns in early pregnancy, such as nausea/vomiting and vaginal bleeding.
  • Perform thorough risk assessments and order appropriate genetic and infectious disease screening tests.
  • Offer evidence-based lifestyle, nutritional, and medication advice specific to early pregnancy.
  • Identify and initiate management for psychosocial issues impacting pregnant women.
  • Navigate and utilise appropriate referral pathways to specialist obstetric and allied health services.
  • Provide initial supportive care and advice for women experiencing miscarriage or suspected ectopic pregnancy.

This activity will employ a blend of interactive and practical learning methods: Didactic Presentations: Evidence-based lectures covering essential knowledge in early pregnancy care. Case Studies: Interactive discussions of diverse patient scenarios from pre-conception to first-trimester complications, focusing on GP decision-making. Panel Discussion/Q&A: Featuring an obstetrician, midwife, and GP with a special interest in women's health to provide multidisciplinary perspectives. Practical Tools & Resources: Provision of checklists for initial pregnancy visits, referral guidelines, patient information leaflets, and reliable online resources. Small Group Discussions: To share clinical experiences, problem-solve challenging cases, and discuss patient communication strategies.

The effectiveness of this CPD activity will be evaluated through: Pre- and post-activity confidence ratings/quizzes: Measuring self-assessed confidence and knowledge gain in key areas of early pregnancy care. Post-activity feedback questionnaires: Collecting structured feedback on content relevance, clarity of presentations, effectiveness of interactive elements, and perceived impact on their clinical practice. Open-ended questions will solicit specific suggestions for improvement. Informal observation: Monitoring participant engagement and identifying common questions or areas of confusion during interactive sessions. All evaluation data will be systematically reviewed. Insights from this data will directly inform content updates, refinement of teaching methodologies, and adjustment of activity duration in future iterations of the program, ensuring its ongoing relevance and effectiveness for GPs in optimising early pregnancy care.
